What Does 5G Mean?

5G is the 5th generation mobile network, following on from the 3G and 4G networks that people are familiar with from using mobile devices. It connects everyone and everything, including machines and devices, providing greater connectivity than was previously possible. It is also faster and more reliable than 3G and 4G.

How Does 5G Work?

Wireless communication systems transmit information through the air using radio frequencies. 5G works this way too, using higher radio frequencies that are less crowded, also known as millimetre waves (mmWaves). This enables 5G to transmit more information much faster.

While mmWaves carry information faster, over large distances they can be blocked by buildings and trees. 5G addresses this problem by using multiple input and output antennas to boost signals and capacity. Instead of building masts, smaller transmitters can be placed on buildings and street furniture, with 5G enabling far more devices to access the mobile internet simultaneously.

What Does The ‘G’ in ‘5G’ Stand For?

5G stands for 5th Generation because it is the fifth iteration of the global mobile network. Starting with 1G in the 1980s, which delivered analogue voice data, the mobile network has grown and developed, moving from the 1st and 2nd generations through to 3G, which saw the start of mobile data, and 4G, which sparked the era of mobile broadband.

What Does 5G Do?

5G allows devices including smartphones to complete actions faster and more reliably. For example, mobile videos play almost instantaneously and without glitches, video calls are clearer, and mobile gamers experience less delay when using a controller or pressing a button.

5G is also crucial to the development of driverless cars, enabling autonomous vehicles to communicate with other cars and traffic management systems.

What Devices Can Connect To 5G?

5G compatible devices can connect to 5G. Mobile phones are being manufactured to work with 5G, however, older smartphones will not work with 5G and will need to be replaced if users want to access 5G. One of the advantages of the 5G network is that it can reliably support many more devices than its predecessor 4G, so it will have the capacity to work with all of the 5G compatible devices that are yet to be made.

Will I Notice an Improvement Using 5G?

You should notice a better user experience when connected to 5G instead of 4G. The connection should be faster and more reliable, meaning improved download speeds, while there will also be less latency or delay between pressing a button and an action being completed.
