New to HD TV? Allow us to explain

Given that we are one of the leading local installers of high-definition, or HD TV aerials here at AAS Advanced Aerial Services, you might expect us to know a fair bit about HD TV and what you need to do to access and enjoy HD TV programming – and we do!

So with that in mind, here are some of the basics that you most need to know.

First of all… what is HD TV?

As you might have guessed by the name, HD TV gives you remarkably crisp and clear pictures compared to standard definition TV, including vivid colours and as much as five times more detail. Sound quality is better, too.

A high-definition TV screen differs from a standard-definition one in that it uses either 720 or 1080 horizontal pixels, compared to the mere 576 that make up the former. That means a HD ready TV gives you up to four times more pixels than a standard-definition TV can offer.

How can I get HD TV?

The first high-definition broadcasts in the UK were trialled by the BBC in May 2006, and today, with an abundance of HD TV channels continuing to become available, it has become a mainstream aspect of the TV watching experience for many people throughout the country.

If you wish to watch HD TV programmes for yourself, you will need to have a compatible TV – so look out for the ‘HD Ready’ logo when purchasing. However, there are several other things that you will require, including an HD Receiver – a digital box that is designed to receive HD – and an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) cable to connect the receiver to the HD Ready TV.

You will also require an aerial, satellite dish or cable connection, depending on which HD TV services you intend to access. Virgin Media, for example, requires a cable connection, while for Freesat and Sky, a satellite dish will need to be installed outside your home and in the case of BT TV and Freeview, an aerial will be an essential investment.
